Every time I drop my son off at school and see a runny nose, I wince. It’s the same if I hear a person next to me at the grocery store hacking up a lung. … I will literally run the other way. I try to avoid sickness at all costs, which is tough when you have kids. But you don’t have to just sit there and take it. There are many ways you can purposely build up your body’s immune system to help you avoid whatever is going around. My favorite health hack though, is blessed thistle tea.
What is Blessed Thistle?
Blessed thistle is not be confused with milk thistle – I repeat – they are not the same thing. Blessed thistle is widely known as a “cure-all” herb, supporting healthy digestion, urinary tract health, upper respiratory issues, and even helping to treat wounds and ulcers. It’s also an incredibly powerful sidekick for your immune system. I mean seriously, it was commonly used during the Middle Ages to treat the Black Plague (the freaking PLAGUE)! So I’m gonna go ahead and trust that it can take on this preschool cold and any other basic concerns (paranoia) that I have.
Try Blessed Thistle Tea
You have options when it comes to your daily dose of blessed thistle. It can be found in supplement form, in liquid tinctures or extracts, and my personal favorite – as a tea. I prefer the tea because it is absorbed faster when ingested and a warm cup of tea is always comforting, especially if you don’t feel well. The herb can be purchased and prepared as a loose tea, or bagged and prepared as a blend. Just simply add a serving to your mug, pour over the herb with boiling water, cover and let it steep for 10-15 minutes before drinking.
If you’ve had an especially rough day, you can opt for something a little stronger, like this recipe for blessed thistle bitter cocktail. This strong, bittersweet drink combines gin, Campari, Amaro, and Cardamaro – a mild Italian spirit made from Moscato wine and blessed thistle. Try it for yourself!
Blessed Thistle Bitter Cocktail
1 ounce gin
1 ounce Campari
¼ ounce CioCiaro Amaro
¼ ounce Cardamaro
1 orange slice
Add all the ingredients (except the orange) to a mixing glass. Fill with ice and stir to chill. Strain in a glass filled with ice. Garnish with the orange.
